DVDR discs

DVDR discs can be used to record data and then the data becomes permanent on the discs. You cannot use the disc to record onto another time. The disc has the ability to contain a maximum of 4.7 billion bytes of information on either side. The maximum capacity may slightly vary, depending upon the type of the blank disc used. As the DVDR is a double sided media, you can store up to 9.4 GB on a single disc.

Dimensions of DVDR discs:

DVDR employs a red laser that a wavelength of 635nanometer and lenses with a numerical aperture of 0.6. Hence, the DVDR discs can record even small marks. The recording power of DVDR is far better than CD-R. It can record 6 to 12 mw, whereas the CD-R can record only 4 to 8 mw. DVDR disc recording is achieved by using a dye recording layer that can be transformed by a highly focused red laser beam.

DVDR discs – for general and authoring:

DVDR discs come in two standards- for general use and for authoring. Generally, the consumers who have DVD recorders use DVDR general discs only. DVDR authoring discs are more expensive and are used on professional burners. These discs are not compatible with each other, but both of them are readable in most of the DVD players and drives.

Recording a DVDR disc:

The recording process for DVDR discs are carried out by application software, which allows you to specify the files that are required to be transferred to the disc. The DVDR discs have three main areas that are recorded on them.

  • Lead in
  • User data
  • Lead out

Methods of writing a DVDR disc:

There are two methods of writing a DVDR disc

  • Disc at once
  • Incremental writing

Disc at once is the process of writing the entire disc at a time. This method can be used for writing multimedia or other software titles, which are meant for publishing. Incremental writing lets you add files directly to a DVDR disc one at a time. The minimum recording size of the file must be at least thirty two kilobytes, in order to use the incremental writing method.
