What is a dual layer disc?

DVDR dual or double layer disc, as the name itself implies, has two layers; one of them is semi transparent and so that the red laser used by the DVDR can focus through it and read the second layer. As both the layers can be read from the same side, the capacity of a dual layer disc is significantly more than the single layer disc.

The second layer in the DVDR disc utilizes either Parallel Track Path layout or Opposite Track Path layout. In the Parallel Track Path layout, the tracks run parallel and in the Opposite Track path, the track runs in the opposite direction. In the latter case, the pickup head reads out the information form the middle of the first track and then from the outside on the second track.

How to recognize the DVDR dual layer disc:

You can recognize whether the DVDR disc has double layers or not, by using some methods

• If the disc is in golden color, then it can be a dual layer one.
• The dual layer disc has a menu outside for choosing the widescreen version
• It comprises of two serial numbers on one side.

DVDR dual layer compatibility:

In the initial period, DVDR dual or double layer had some compatibility issues like pickup head overrun. This problem is now rectified by using a Layer Jump Recording technology.
